This is the Bufo Alvarius, also known as the “Colorado River Toad” or the “Sonoran Desert Toad”. The venom in this bad boys glands and skin contain the psychoactive tryptamines Bufotenin and 5-MeO-DMT. As far as I know, licking these toads resulting in a psychedelic experience is an urban myth. However, the active chemicals can certainly be extracted, dried and smoked. The venom from this toad is commonly used in the shamanic brewing of Ayahuasca, an ancient entheogenic plant medicine used for spiritual exploration into unknown mystical realms of consciousness. Get your own Bufo Alvarius from Bouncing Bear Botanicals. Hell, go on an Ayahuasca Healing Retreat. Here’s the ignorant article that sparked this quick post. It’s currently 100% legal to own a Bufo Alvarius Toad in the United States, so unless this guy was caught with the extracted venom, I don’t see how this case will hold up in court.
