Not really the fairy tale land of Doctor Who, police who don’t carry guns and Harry Potter, England can be a pretty grim place to live. Starting with the punk movement through to the current dubstep scene, the societal conditions of a country with a fucked up class struggle that’s filled with housing projects and unemployment has brought us a lot of interesting music.
And that’s what this mixtape is about: the amazing albeit bleak music of England. (I have nothing against it as a country or a group of people, I just thought this would make for a good mix).

What better way to celebrate Dia de los Muertos than some brutal MEXICAN DEATH METAL?
The album’s title translates to “Hated Race” (watch Lou Dobbs to figure out who that is) and features songs about immigration politics, the Zapatista movement and the drug war along with more traditional death metal themes. Ex-Dead Kennedys vocalist Jello Biafra appears as a tongue in cheek version Californian governor Pete Wilson on one track. This music is the polar opposite of what people commonly think of as “Mexican Music”, e.g. Ranchera (the polka sounding stuff that’s on like four AM stations) or Morrissey (seriously). Like gangsta rap before it turned into a showcase of Bentleys and diamonds, Brujeria has got to scare the shit out of White People.

For a treat, I’ve tracked down a copy of Skinny Puppy’s infamous “Worlock” video. This video was created by cEvin and Ogre of Skinny Puppy using cut footage from horror movies that was removed by various ratings boards. Because of the nature of the work, it’ll never have a commercial release, due to the graphic content and copyright clearance problems.
Which is what makes the Internet awesome, years ago this was something that you had to spend time tracking it down at horror movie conventions or from ads in the back of zines and when you got it was a 5th generation VHS tape and looked like ass. These days, it’s on youtube.
They’re goth but they wear all white? and film videos that look like Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade? Good song, strange video. I miss 120 Minutes, although I guess VH1 Classic shows Classic 120 Minutes now.
A mixtape about sleep from a guy who can’t sleep. It’s a sleepy mix of songs about sleep interspersed with some ambient tracks. Perfect for counting sheep or browsing the internet at 3am. Insomniac.

A mixtape about nuclear war. When I was growing up in the 1980s, I really felt that there was not going to be a future. It just seemed inevitable. What better way to deny the inevitable than with a dance party?
Of course we didn’t know to much later that the Russians were cooking the books and that by the end of the decade they’d be insolvent and the Cold War would be over. Any young person these days probably think it was all very ridiculous.

First off, FUCK SAW. That series is one of the most braindead, boring series to ever blight the genre of horror. Pretty much the only people it appears to are Frat Boys who get chubbies from fake gore and don’t need such simple things like a story.
Second, FUCK remakes, unless they’re by John Carpenter. Hollywood just churns out remake after remake of classic horror movies because they know that today’s emo teenager is too clueless to actually watch the classics and will line up to see these cinematic abortions. Much like how they idolize Fallout Boy and My Chemical Romance, but have no idea who Fugazi or The Cure are. But I digress.
I made this list not to be all inclusive or to highlight rare films, I made it to share a list of ten awesome horror movies that provide excellent entertainment value for watching this Halloween. So, please enjoy.
Near Dark
Basically this movie is the anti-Twilight. The cast of Aliens (Bill Paxton, Lance Hendriksen, the tough Mexican broad) are a clan of vampires that drive across the lonely highways of the American Southwest in a Winnebago with blacked out windows, leaving a trail of blood and terror in their wake.
This is the vampire as what it’s supposed to be: a remorseless killer driven by insatiable bloodlust. No sparkling pretty boys to be seen. Directed by Katherine Bigelow, who directed the excellent Iraq war film this summer, The Hurt Locker.
Level of Rowtow: Some good gore, great performance from Paxton, but no drugs or perverted sex. Minimally Rowtow, but an excellent movie.

John Carpenter’s The Thing
The only remake allowed on this list. John Carpenter took a novel idea from a vintage 50s monster movie, stripped it down and created something better. A remote Antarctic research station is infected by an alien lifeform that takes over other people’s bodies. The survivors must battle paranoia as they try to determine which of them is actually the alien. Kurt Russel delivers a winning performance as Macready, the base’s helicopter pilot. Groundbreaking levels of gore and a taut, psychological story drive this movie.
Level of Rowtow?: Insane-o levels of gore, some hardcore boozing and Kurt Russel dumping a mug of whiskey into a computer after it beats him at a game. Pretty goddamn Rowtow. Also, it’s got Wilford Brimley.
